Qi Hongwei is currently Gehu Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He joined the Orchestra in 2007. Qi was formerly a Principal Bass with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Bass Gehu Society of the Chinese Musicians’ Association. He began learning the cello at an early age, and later entered the middle school section of the China Conservatory with outstanding admission results in double bass subject. Graduated from the Orchestral Instruments Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, Qi was trained under Wei Baozheng, the famous teacher and bassist. While still a student, he performed with the China Symphony, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the China Film Philharmonic etc., and was highly praised by the renowned conductors Zhang Guoyong.
